What is register S in the bass? Empty

Today while reading some Wagner pieces transcribed by Karg-Elert I found the register "S" in a square at the beginning of a piece (bass).
In this work, you can decide yourself if you want to use this "S" or (oder) Méta 543.

Could this be the Sub basse? (=musette 16' in the bass?)
I don't think so as none of the 543 is a 16' register (2' + 8' + 4')
There should probably also be a note concerning the octava signs if a 16' is to be used in this passage...

all help is very welcome!

Nils

I think the (S) means "Sourdine", which I found as a stop at some of my harmoniums (Christophe & Étienne, Trayser, Balthasar-Florence). More often it is a bass stop but the B-F has it on bass and treble.

Kind regards / Cordialement

thank you for your reply!

The "S" indeed stands for sourdine in single-expression harmonium literature, it is however never found on a kunstharmonium.
The score indicates S oder Méta543 in squares! squares stand for kunstharmonium.

very strange...

Could it be an editor's mistake ?
I've never seen a Sourdine on a kunstharmonium. Th closest thing I can think about is the Sourdine Générale on some nice Alexandre (described elsewhere on the forum).
This would be consistent with a double registration sggestion for usual harmonium or kunstharmonium. Is there such a thing on this score ?

What is register S in the bass? Regist10

In the right hand the same is happening, but! because of the additional 7 (32') the "8va" sign is added.
If the "S" would mean "5" there should be an "15 bassa sign" ...mind that it is impossible to play this passage 2 octaves lower...

Maybe it is indeed the sourdine, the arrow could be pointing only to "sourdine" oder "métaphone" ...

Ok, I think I have the solution:

This scores uses normal-harmonium registrations which are just written out, or are indicated in CIRCLES.. (should be octagonals)
the normal pressure harmonium-indications are in squares as well...very confusing..

at another occurrence of S = sanftem 8' = soft 8' = sourdine Smile

Yes, Nils - you are right - this is a typographical error - The "S" should have been either in an ocatagonal or a circle (not in a square). There is a clear remark saying 'Saugluft(harmonium)', meaning the Sourdine should be used in case of a suction-type harmonium (which remplaced the pressure harmoniums in Germany). In German we call the American-style harmonium 'Saugwindharmonium' or less frequently 'Saugluftharmonium' and the French-style harmonium 'Druckwindharmonium' respectively 'Druckluftharmonium'.
